The Sapphires

Hey guys!

I really can’t believe how much time has passed since my last post. But from now on I want to blog more frequently again.
Todays post is about „The Sapphires“, an Australian movie from 2012.

What is it about?
The Sapphires is loosely based on a true story. It takes place in the year 1968. Three young Aboriginal women want to start their music career by singing for the soldiers in Vietnam. The talent scout Dave Lovelace gets them an audition and completed by their half Aboriginal cousin they actually get the job in Vietnam. Soon they become a huge success and enjoy their tour but also have to face the dangers of living in a war zone.

What do I like about it?
I have to admit, my summary may make the film seem a little flat – which it is totally not. For once it has great actors: They don’t fit the Hollywood standard and seem really authentic. Another great thing about the film is that it is funny without using the typical jokes. It makes you laugh about everyday life situations, about things you really could imagine being said this way. Then it also has a deeper message. It deals not only with one, but with two serious topics: The Vietnam war and racism in Australia. However the film manages not to point with the finger on someone, it doesn’t just simply teach a lessen. It tells a story through which important historical subjects are demonstrated but which is not only there to demonstrate these.
